Shay Maguire Art:

I am a contemporary Irish painter with a distinctive approach to colour, light and place, working across several media, with a 30-year practice of painting directly onto glass.

My work explores the character of Ireland, from the urban energy of Dublin to the quieter, more elemental landscapes of the West of Ireland. I am interested in how light, colour and form can show a familiar place in a different way. Dublin’s streets, Poolbeg, bridges and architecture sit alongside boglands, grasses, wildflowers and coastal landscapes, reflecting the contrast between the city and the west.

Alongside watercolour, acrylic and oil, painting directly onto glass is an important and enduring part of my practice. Glass allows me to simplify composition and create paintings that can appear vivid, immediate and atmospheric, offering the viewer a different perspective. Working across different media and subjects gives me the artistic freedom to explore colour, light, place and the visual character of Ireland in different ways. Ultimately, my paintings are about taking something familiar and showing it in a new and beautiful way.
